Summer Reading

We're keeping it simple. Our county library has faced drastic spending cuts. One of the effects is a less exciting Summer Reading program for kids. So we've created our own.

Having a reluctant reader, I have no qualms about bribing him to read. My kid is a huge Godzilla toy collector. He's reading books this summer to earn a new Bandai Creation figure.

We made a simple chart for him with spaces to list books he reads and their point value. For each point he will add a sticker to the chart. When he reaches 50, we'll hit the toy store.

We gathered a nice selection of books from thrift stores, used book stores and the library. I assigned a point value to each book and marked it in pencil in the corner of the first page. Short and easy reads are worth 1 point. Chapter books and books with more challenging vocabulary are worth more.

And he's reading!

He's lazing on his bed and in the hammock with a book. He's reading over his waffles in the morning. Who knew!?

There was a special on River Monsters about the giant salamanders called Gozira [which is where Godzilla's name comes from]. Perhaps your kids might enjoy it. Its a little scary though. So you might want to check it out first.
here is a link to the main site:
